Dive medicals for the Great Barrier Reef

Heading to Cairns, Port Douglas or the Whitsundays? Most Reef dive schools and liveaboards ask for a dive medical to Australian Standard AS4005.1. Get yours in Bondi before you fly, so nothing holds up your first dive.

Why Reef operators ask for a dive medical

Queensland dive operators take medical fitness seriously. Most dive schools ask every student for a medical to Australian Standard AS4005.1 before a course, and liveaboards and day-boat operators often ask certified divers with a medical condition, such as asthma, for one before they get in the water.

A medical done overseas may not be accepted unless it meets the Australian standard. Getting it done in Sydney before you head north is the simplest way to avoid a nasty surprise at check-in.

When to book

Ideally a few days to a couple of weeks before you fly. If Dr Harry needs to look at something more closely, such as a test or a specialist opinion, that gives you time to sort it out without missing your trip.

Short on time? Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours.

What to bring

  • The medical form from your dive school or liveaboard, if they’ve sent one. Many Queensland operators email a printable AS4005.1 form before your trip.
  • A list of any medications you take.
  • Photo ID.
  • Your Medicare card, if you have one. You don’t need one to be seen.

No form? No problem. We keep the standard dive medical form at the practice.

Visiting from overseas?

You’re welcome to book or walk in. You don’t need a Medicare card, and you can pay on the day by cash, EFTPOS or card, including Apple Pay. Please call 02 9389 8000 for current fees.

Your dive school or operator sets the rules, so check exactly what they need before you travel.

Common questions

Will a dive medical from my home country be accepted?

It depends on the operator. Many Australian dive schools only accept a medical that meets AS4005.1, so check before you travel. If you’re unsure, getting one done in Sydney removes the doubt.

Can I get my medical the day before I fly?

Yes. If you’re fit to dive, you leave with your paperwork signed. Booking a little earlier is safer, though, in case anything needs a closer look.

I’m already a certified diver. Do I still need one?

Not always. Certified divers usually fill in a health questionnaire with the operator. If you answer yes to any question, or you have a condition such as asthma, expect to need a medical.

Do I need to book, or can I walk in?

Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours. Booking ahead gets you a set time, while walk-in waits can vary.
